6 Home Remedies to Stop Cold and Cough in Kids This Monsoon





Kids have a way of keeping us parents on our toes! If it isn’t their little mischievous games or quarrels with friends or siblings, it is their health concerns. Rains are here and it’s time to get more cautious with kids this season.

No matter how much we try and protect our children, they somehow manage to catch some infection or the other, especially in monsoons. This is because as kids grow and develop, their immune systems develop with them. In a way, it is necessary that their little bodies are exposed to cold viruses, so that they develop immunity against more and more illnesses.

Nonetheless, as parents, it is sad to see our little ones trying to cope with the nuances of colds and cough. In the rainy season, water tends to collect at many places, giving the mosquito population a boost. Also, monsoons tend to cool down the weather, and the sudden change in temperature makes it easier for your child to catch a cold.



Here are some home remedies that may help to get your kid back to their normal, cheerful self faster:

Steam:

The most effective way to get rid of common cold for kids of all ages is using steam. All you need is a vaporizer filled with water, and run it through the night in your child’s room. For added comfort, you may add a few drops of eucalyptus oil to the water, or juice of half a lemon. Steam helps clear the nasal passage, and makes it easy for your child to breathe.

Gargling:

Early morning gargles with warm salt water is an effective way of opening up the lungs and clearing the throat. Children above four years can be taught to gargle to ease their congestion.

Honey and Ginger:

One teaspoon of honey, mixed with the juice of some ginger, is a great way to soothe colds. However, honey should not be given to children under one year of age, for fear of causing botulism.

Mustard Oil Massage:

Heat lightly mustard oil with a couple of garlic cloves and massage your child’s chest, back and throat. It will ensure their little bodies remain warm, while breaking down chest congestion within. Check the temperature of the oil before massage.

Turmeric Milk:

For children above 1 year of age, you can mix a pinch of turmeric powder in their warm milk. It has been known to be an effective tool for easing cold and flu symptoms.

Tulsi:

Tulsi leaves cause instant relief to children with cold. You can either give some leaves as is, to chew, or add some tulsi juice drops to your child’s milk to help remove congestion.

Some standard precautions you should take include keeping your home mosquito free, ensuring that drinking water is safe, preferably boiled, giving your child nutritious, home cooked meals and keeping your child’s hands and feet clean. A bowl of piping hot, clear soup served with your love is also a sure way to cure your child faster.
